Acute paraquat poisoning is a medical emergency. Chronic low-dose exposure produces no immediate symptoms but creates long-term neurologic risk. Most paraquat Parkinson's claimants were not poisoned acutely — they were exposed repeatedly at occupational levels over years.
Acute exposure
Acute ingestion of paraquat is highly toxic. Symptoms include burning of the mouth and throat, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and — within days — progressive lung injury, kidney failure, and liver damage. Acute paraquat poisoning has no effective antidote and a high case fatality rate.
Dermal and inhalation exposure
Skin contact with concentrated paraquat causes burns and irritation. Inhalation of paraquat mist during spraying causes airway irritation. These acute occupational exposures do not always produce overt symptoms but are the route by which most chronic exposures occur.
Chronic occupational exposure
Most paraquat Parkinson's claimants experienced years of low-level dermal and inhalation exposure during mixing, loading, application, and equipment cleanup. There are no immediate symptoms. The neurologic injury accumulates silently over decades.
Early Parkinson's symptoms
Early Parkinson's symptoms include resting tremor, slowness of movement, muscle rigidity, micrographia (small handwriting), loss of smell, REM sleep behavior disorder, constipation, and changes in facial expression. Many of these symptoms are easy to attribute to aging — which is why diagnosis is often delayed.
When to see a movement disorder specialist
If you have known paraquat exposure and any of the above symptoms, ask your primary care physician for referral to a movement disorder neurologist. Diagnosis is clinical — there is no single definitive test — and an experienced specialist can identify Parkinson's earlier than a general neurologist.
