Hired farmworkers — many of them migrant or seasonal — have been at the front lines of paraquat exposure for decades. They mix, load, and apply paraquat, and they re-enter treated fields. Documentation can be challenging, but it is rarely impossible.
Why exposure intensity is high
Farmworkers perform the highest-exposure tasks: mixing concentrate, loading sprayers, riding open-cab tractors, applying paraquat by hand-held sprayer, and re-entering fields shortly after application. Personal protective equipment compliance varies. Many farmworkers were not informed of the long-term neurologic risk.
The migrant worker documentation problem
Many farmworkers — especially migrant and seasonal workers — have incomplete employment records. Payroll documentation, social security earnings records, witness statements from foremen and co-workers, and EPA-required applicator records can all help reconstruct exposure history.
Language and immigration considerations
Reputable paraquat firms handle intake in Spanish and other languages. Immigration status is not a bar to a personal injury claim. Confidentiality and trust matter — choose counsel that understands these dynamics.
Re-entry interval exposures
Re-entering fields too soon after paraquat application is a high-exposure event. Documentation that re-entry intervals were not respected — through employer testimony, supervisor statements, or co-worker witnesses — can be powerful evidence.
Family members
Take-home exposure (paraquat residues on clothing, in vehicles, and in the home) has been documented for several pesticides. Family members of paraquat-exposed farmworkers may also have viable claims with appropriate documentation.
Get a free case review
If you or a family member were exposed to paraquat and have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, request a free case review. It takes 15 to 30 minutes by phone, costs nothing, and locks in your place while settlement options remain open. Check eligibility or call (717) 724-7503.
