MDL 3004 is the federal multidistrict litigation centralizing paraquat Parkinson's cases. Federal paraquat Parkinson's cases are consolidated in Multidistrict Litigation No. 3004, In re: Paraquat Products Liability Litigation, before Chief Judge Nancy J. Rosenstengel in the Southern District of Illinois. Thousands of cases are pending. A parallel mass tort program operates in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas before Judge Joshua Roberts, currently hosting approximately 1,799 active paraquat cases. In April 2025 Syngenta announced a settlement framework covering a substantial portion of the U.S. inventory; in January 2026 the first Philadelphia bellwether case settled confidentially on the courthouse steps. In March 2026 Syngenta announced it would discontinue U.S. production of paraquat. For plaintiffs and their families, the MDL's procedural posture is not academic: it determines when individual cases get worked up, when trials happen, and what causation evidence is admissible.
What an MDL is — and isn't
An MDL consolidates pretrial proceedings — discovery, expert work, motion practice — in one court for efficiency. Each plaintiff still has an individual case with an individual recovery, and cases are typically remanded to the original district for trial if they don't settle first. MDL 3004 is not a class action.
Daubert and causation
Causation rulings on plaintiffs' expert testimony shape whether paraquat-Parkinson's evidence reaches a jury. The MDL court's handling of these motions has been closely watched because it influences settlement leverage on both sides of the docket.
Bellwether trials
Bellwether cases are representative trials chosen to give both sides information about jury reactions. Outcomes drive settlement valuations across the entire inventory. The Philadelphia state court system has effectively offered its own bellwether — the January 2026 case settled on the courthouse steps before a jury was empaneled.
Remand and individual trials
Cases that do not resolve through the MDL settlement framework are remanded to the federal district where they were originally filed for individual trial. Trial schedules vary by district. Pennsylvania state court claimants generally have a faster path to trial than federal MDL plaintiffs.
Practical takeaway
The MDL status matters less than your individual eligibility and the strength of your exposure documentation. The single most useful thing you can do today is a free case review with experienced paraquat counsel.
